OUR FUTURE HOME
In March 2009, the Kohelet Foundation announced a plan to offer a long-term, rent-free lease of the former Akiba Hebrew Academy property in Merion to Stern Hebrew High School. The plan reflects the Foundation’s vision and generosity and includes a full renovation and furnishing of the complex which will serve to enhance its functionality and beauty, both inside and out. Given the scope of the improvements, the site is scheduled for occupancy for the 2010-11 school year. This time period will also enable the school to plan for a smooth transition from its current location in Northeast Philadelphia. In recognition of the Kohelet Foundation’s transformative gift, the school will be officially renamed the Kohelet Yeshiva High School – at the Martha & Harry Stern Campus.
The New Beit Midrash
As the cornerstone to the renovation, a Beit Midrash addition has been planned. This exquisite space will provide the school with a home for daily davening and use as a Judaic study hall. Filled with generous natural light and a high ceiling, the room will seat up to 180 with tables and chairs, and will include recessed bookshelves, a full mechitza and aron kodesh. The beautiful design will integrate this structure with a redesigned main entrance to the school, greatly adding to the function while complementing the aesthetic character of the original stone mansion.
Why the Move Makes Sense
The opportunity to move to a larger campus with more spacious and modernized classrooms. better equipped, multiple science labs, and a full-sized gymnasium in the heart of a growing, vibrant suburban Orthodox community is one that could not be passed up. Indeed, the move to the Main Line will enable the school to continue its growth and development and fortify its reputation for academic excellence. Its new location in Lower Merion is at the center of a community that is the school’s largest source of students and is easily accessible to other feeder communities such as Northeast Philadelphia, Elkins Park and Cherry Hill, NJ.
